I finished up Meep’s American gothic and and penguin commission yesterday.
For the American Gothic painting I was asked to paint meep in famous paintings, specifically American Gothic and The Scream. At first I was going to try to copy the original painting style as exact as I could, but after a few sketches I changed my minde. I really liked the idea of a cartoon like feeling and a sketched background. I liked that you could still tell it was a version of American Gothic without having to copy the original.
For the penguin painting I was just told to paint a penguin. I’ve been fascinated lately with sketch type paintings. I had a hard time painting outside the lines a while ago, so for a while I only painted with a sloppy sort of feel. I have always loved the way things look when the paint bleeds and when you can see pencil marks. A lot of my stuff lately has kept this feel in the work and this is how I painted the penguin commission.
I thought it would be nice if penguins could get along with one of their natural predators, so in this piece I painted a penguin feeding a baby killer whale.
